Privacy Policy

The short version: branchnote collects nothing, transmits nothing, and has no server to send your notes to. The longer version follows.

Who this applies to

This policy covers the branchnote mobile app and the website at branchnote.io, both operated by Branchnote LLC ("we", "us"). It explains what happens to your information — which, in this app's case, is mostly a description of things that don't happen.

What we collect

Nothing. We collect no personal information from the branchnote app. Specifically, the app contains:

  • no user accounts, sign-up, or login;
  • no analytics or usage-measurement SDKs;
  • no crash- or performance-reporting services;
  • no advertising, ad identifiers, or ad networks;
  • no tracking across apps or websites;
  • no third-party software development kits of any kind.

The app has no backend server, so there is nowhere for it to send your notes to us even if it tried. The one way the app itself puts your notes elsewhere is a backup file that you create and place yourself, described below.

Your notes

Everything you write — your branches, your notes, and their timestamps — is stored in a database in the app's private storage on your own device.

  • The database is not encrypted. Your notes are held as ordinary text. The protection they have is the one your operating system provides: other apps cannot read another app's private storage, and the app itself can be shut behind a passcode.
  • Anyone with access to your unlocked device can read your notes in the app, unless you have set a passcode.
  • We have no copy of your notes, no ability to read them, and no way to recover them.

Your notes are included in your device's own backup. If you back your phone up to iCloud or Google Drive, branchnote's database is part of that backup, and is covered by Apple's or Google's terms rather than ours. This means your notes survive losing or replacing the device — but it also means a copy exists wherever that backup is kept.

Backups you create

branchnote can also copy your notes into a single backup file, which you then save wherever you choose. This is the only circumstance in which the app itself puts your notes somewhere else, and it only happens when you ask for it.

  • The backup file is not encrypted. Anyone who has the file can read your notes, so it is exactly as private as the place you choose to keep it.
  • Where the file goes is entirely your choice. If you save it to a cloud service such as iCloud Drive or Dropbox, that provider holds a readable copy of your notes, governed by their terms rather than ours. We are not involved in the transfer and receive nothing.
  • Backup files are not removed by deleting the app. They remain wherever you put them until you delete them yourself.

App lock and biometrics

You may optionally protect the app with a numeric passcode, and optionally unlock it with Face ID, Touch ID, or a fingerprint.

  • Your passcode is never stored as typed. Only a salted cryptographic hash of it is kept, in your device's keychain (iOS) or keystore (Android).
  • Biometric verification is performed entirely by your operating system. The app only receives a yes-or-no result. We never receive, see, or store your face or fingerprint data.

Links you open

If you save a web link in a note and tap it, the app opens it in your device's in-app browser. At that point you are visiting a third-party website, and that site's own privacy practices apply. This is the only circumstance in which the app makes a network connection, and it only happens when you deliberately ask it to.

App stores

branchnote is distributed through the Apple App Store and, in future, Google Play. Those companies operate independently of us and may collect their own information when you download or use an app — for example purchase records, device information, or crash diagnostics you have chosen to share with them at the operating-system level. That collection is governed by Apple's and Google's privacy policies, not this one. When Apple provides us with aggregated statistics about downloads, they contain no information that identifies any individual.

This website

branchnote.io is a static informational site. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics, and embeds no third-party scripts, fonts, or trackers. Our hosting provider processes standard server request logs (such as IP addresses) transiently for security and to deliver the site, as any web host must.

Your rights

Privacy laws including the EU and UK GDPR and the California Consumer Privacy Act give you rights to access, correct, export, or delete the personal information a company holds about you. We hold none, so there is nothing for us to disclose, correct, or delete on request.

You remain in full control of your own data at all times: delete a note or a branch inside the app, or delete the app to remove its database from your device. We do not sell or share personal information, because we do not have any.

Changes to this policy

If a future version of branchnote adds a feature that changes any of this — cloud sync being the obvious candidate — we will update this policy before that feature ships, and change the "last updated" date above. Material changes will be described in the app's release notes.
